Pointer Magazine

SUMMARY

Master’s project at ELISAVA (Barcelona) developed in four months. Pointer is a quarterly magazine reframing hunting and fishing through a modern, urban and environmentally responsible lifestyle lens. Academic project with no commercial intent; images belong to their authors.

PROBLEM

Offer a positive and responsible view of hunting/fishing that is appealing to a general audience and useful to practitioners, avoiding glorification and centring sustainability.

RESEARCH
  • Editorial benchmark across outdoor/lifestyle and hunting/fishing titles.
  • Reader profiles: responsible practitioner, curious urban reader, companions.

EDITORIAL STRATEGY

ART DIRECTION & VISUAL SYSTEM
  • Typography: editorial serif + humanised sans; rhythm and legibility.
  • Seasonal colour palette with infographic accents.
  • 12-column grid + baseline; airy pacing for photo essays.
  • Documentary/landscape photography; portraits of crafts and people.
  • Infographics: regulations, maps and calendars.
  • Accessibility: AA contrast, 55–75 CPL, 130–145% leading.
PROCESS
  • Moodboards and wordlists to align tone.
  • Wireframes low → mid → high fidelity (contents, openers, long read, visual index).
  • Printed dummy and sessions with mixed readers.
  • Style guides: grids, text styles, photo-essay modules.
ETHICAL FRAMEWORK (GENERAL GUIDELINES)
  • Licences and insurance; closed seasons and bag limits; permitted methods.
  • Respect for protected species, minimum sizes and safety.
  • Full utilisation and zero waste; minimise lead use.
  • Catch-and-release where applicable; animal welfare.
  • Active conservation and reference to current regional regulations.
PRODUCTION
  • Interior 120–135 g/m²; cover 250–300 g/m²; sewn + PUR binding.
  • Covers that narrate small expeditions, independent from the interior.
